The other day, there was one loafer on the floor of my office lobby. A lonely loafer, respectable brownish-black leather, bright red on the inside.
The first thing I thought: “Who lost one bright-red-inside loafer in the lobby, and how?”
The second: “Now, that could be some great office-lobby art.”
Seriously, though: one loafer, bright red inside. A briefcase. An umbrella. Scattered here and there, fixed to the floor. That would be interesting and entertaining office-lobby art, it would say something interesting about offices and lobbies. And it would be visually striking, especially if the briefcase and umbrella were also, say, bright red inside.
Imagine: office-lobby art with actual content, something kinda clever, not just there to gesture vaguely in the direction of Art. Stranger things have happened, right?

I think this lobby art concept is fabulous, though I am not sure it falls into the realm of visual art. Somehow it seems more literary to me, some form of metaphor: a physical key to experience. And the result experience is just exactly the kind that bleary office workers need-a jump start into their own imagination. What more could you ask for from art?

This reminded me of a post my friend recently wrote: http://seriouslyjazzed.blogspot.com/2008/07/modern-art-for-modern-office.html

Installation lobby art! I remember seeing the offices of Peter Norton junior year when my art class took a field trip to LA. These were, I believe, his private offices, but they were offices nonetheless, and literally crawling with art. As in, he had one young artist he’s trying to draw attention to actually come in and install a project throughout his floor of the building, creeping in and out of offices and around hallways like a vine of candy wrappers and other colorful little objects and trash that was, well, impressively playful and striking.
Not exactly a lobby, but eXtreme office art!
